Obituary for Clarence E. "Duke" Doughty

Clarence E. (Duke) Doughty, age 91, of Mays Landing, completed the work God gave him on earth and entered the presence of the Lord, on Thursday, March 16, 2023. He was born in Hadlock, VA on July 17, 1931 to the late Clarence Doughty, Sr and Goldie (Mager) Doughty Frees.

He later moved to Trainer, PA and then Eddystone, PA, where he graduated from Eddystone High School in 1949. He was very involved in Boy Scouts and church activities.

In 1950, Duke enlisted in the US Navy. He served in San Diego, Okinawa and Hawaii. He always spoke of his service with great pride. And was so happy when he was able to show his wife his Hawaii.

In 1955, Duke married, Barbara, the love of his life. They eventually moved their family to Mays Landing where he was a 35-year employee at Wheaton Plastics and also, the well-known owner of Doughty Studio. Many will remember him for taking their wedding pictures and children's portraits. It was with great joy he captured those moments.

Duke loved Boy Scouts. He was a veteran member (79 years) of the Boy Scouts of America and the former Scout Leader of Troop 254 in Mays Landing. He also led troops in Trainer and Philadelphia PA. Boys who were in his troop were blessed and still remember their time together. He took them on many 50 Milers (hikes) and adventurous canoe trips, including one to Ely, Minnesota.

Duke had a love for history and served on the Historical Society of Hamilton Township. He was his church's historian and was the editor of The Doughty Tree, a publication with Doughty genealogy that he researched and gathered. A copy of which is in the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. It is also in the Family Search Library of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, one of the largest genealogical libraries in the world.

He was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Mays Landing, and held many positions of leadership during his tenure there.

Duke is predeceased by his parents and his brothers Martin and Larry Doughty.

As busy as he was with all of his activities, family was his first love and he loved them well. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, just short of 68 years, Barbara (Ferguson); children, Deborah (Joseph) Bosch, Mark Doughty, Timothy (Patricia) Doughty and Andrew (Christine) Doughty. He was Poppy to Matthew (Christine) Linardo, Dakotah (William) Cunningham, Emily Doughty, Elijah (Anca) Doughty, Kaitlin (Cliff) Cartwright, Hannah (Michael) Ward, Abraham Doughty, Levi Doughty, Joshua Doughty and Jeremiah Doughty; and 13 great-grandchildren: Abigail, Elizabeth, Ellie, Nathan, Sophia, Phoebe, James, Gracie, Leah, Aurora, Elsie, Xavier and Zoe. Duke is also survived by his sister, Jackie (John) Dewees, Brother-in-Law, Rodger (Suzanne) Ferguson and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at First United Methodist Church of Mays Landing, 6011 Main Street, Mays Landing, NJ on Saturday, March 25, 2023 from 12:00-2:00 PM with a service to begin at 2:00 PM. Burial with military honors immediately following at Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery in Estell Manor.
