Gary R. Smith of Mays Landing, NJ passed away peacefully on April 30th, 2023, at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia at the age of 76. He was born on December 16th, 1946, in Baltimore, Maryland, where he spent his early life.
Gary was a proud veteran of the United States Army, having served from June 1964 to June 1967. During his service, he was deployed to Vietnam from January 1966 to January 1967, where he demonstrated bravery and dedication to his country. After his service, Gary joined the Baltimore Police Department in April 1969 and served as an officer until August 1978. During his tenure, he made a valuable contribution to the safety and security of his community. Following his time in law enforcement, Gary then spent 32 years working for Resorts Casino’s Security and Surveillance from August 1978 to January 2010. He greatly enjoyed his time at Resorts where he had a mutual respect and love for all of his colleagues and clients.
Gary is survived by his beloved wife Barbara Smith, his son David Smith (Christine), and his stepchildren, Danielle Pagan (Ray), Jolene Massey, and Ronald Massey (Felicia). Gary was a proud grandfather to his nine grandchildren: Daniel Smith, Andrew Smith, Rayelle Pagan, Isabella Pagan, Alexander Pagan, Sophie Delgado, Arianna Massey, Juliana Massey, and Jackson Massey. Gary is also survived by his five sisters: Rita Keen, Patricia Priesinger, Jene Fryer, Sharon Reignier, Dorothea Smith, and his brother, Michael Smith. He was predeceased by his brother, Charles Smith, and his parents Rita Catherine LaPlanche and Paul I. LaPlanche. Gary will also be missed by his many nieces and nephews, as well as many other family members and close friends.
Gary was a die-hard Baltimore sports fan and loved cheering on the Orioles and the Ravens. He also loved spending time with his dogs, Max and Lilly. Max was always by his side, and will miss him dearly.
A committal service and burial will be held at The Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery at Estell Manor Park, 109 Boulevard Rt. 50, Mays Landing, NJ 08330 on Monday, May 8th at 1pm. Gary will be remembered for his dedication to his family and his country, his commitment to serving and protecting his community, and his kind and generous nature of always wanting to help others. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
