George Dietrich, 86, formerly of Northfield NJ died January 3 after a lengthy illness.
George was born in Baltimore to Muriel (nee Farrington) and A. Austin Dietrich. He attended University of Baltimore where he was a baseball standout. He was recruited to the minor leagues where he played with Al Kaline. A knee injury sidelined that career. He then joined the US Army, became a Military Police Officer who guarded the dignitaries at Arlington National Cemetery. His proudest moment there was when General Eisenhower greeted him, “Looking good soldier.” After his honorable discharge, George headed to South Jersey where he found his calling at the Flanders Hotel in Ocean City NJ. He managed and was Vice-President of the Flanders Hotel with pride and distinction for 29 years.
Of many the things George was proud of, his singing was what he really loved, other than golf. He was always singing. His time in the Barbershop club was a joy to him. He could also be found at the golf course. He played nearly every day after his retirement.
He is predeceased by his brother Austin, his mother and father. George is survived by his daughters Alane Dunn and Kelly Johnson. Also numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Serenity unit at Autumn Lakes, Visiting Angels, Addie, Louise and Denise, and Compassionate Care for taking such good care of our father.
