Obituary for Joan M. Cooker

Joan M. Cooker (nee Campbell), - 86, of Mays Landing, passed away at Mainland Hospital on Monday, November 23, 2020, with her loving children by her side.

Joan was born in September 1934 and raised in Camden, NJ, growing up in a loving Catholic family with her parents, William and Catherine Campbell, her sister, Margaret, “Cass” and two brothers Fred and William, affectionately known as the “Billy and Freddy” or the “Bald brothers.”

Joan met and married the love of life, Robert Cooker, and the couple was married for fifty-one years. During these years, Joan proudly worked in Human Resources at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ. Joan and Robert had five children; daughters Joan M. DeLucas (Partner, James) of Fort Myers, Fl., and Kathleen M. Cooker (Partner, Andrew) of Berlin, NJ and three sons, John J. Cooker (Donna) of Cape Coral Fl.; James J. Cooker (Honour) of Hammonton, NJ. and Mark J. Cooker (Christine) of Hammonton, NJ. Joan and Bob loved to spend time with their six grandchildren; Christian, Mackenzie, Brittany, Amanda, Matthew and Victoria, as well as their many nieces and nephews.

Bob and Joan raised their five children proudly and ensured that life lessons were learned that ultimately prepared their children for the unexpected trials and tribulations of life. The opportunities and boundaries established by the couple, stood as the foundation for their children to become honest, steadfast and hard-working adults, a true benchmark of successful parents.

Joan and Bob spent some of their retirement years living in Florida where Joan volunteered at an area hospital but eventually they returned to New Jersey and resided in Mays Landing. Prior to Robert Cooker’s passing in May 2004, Joan focused on Bob’s health needs but she was never too busy to celebrate in the lives of her children, grandchildren and all of her extended family. Joan possessed a fierce sense of “always doing the right thing,” being a faithful Catholic and she made lasting impressions on too many people to mention.

For the last 15 plus years, Joan has had “two additional family members” kindly referred to as Irene and Greg. Joan’s family would like to acknowledge and thank Irene and Greg for the kindness & the love shared with their mother.

Due to Covid restrictions arrangements will be private.
