Phyllis (Stout) Oberly, 81, of Marmora, NJ went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 13, 2021.

Phyllis was born in Bridgeton, NJ on September 29, 1939 to Francis Stout and Anna (Swing) Stout. She and her sister, Janet, grew up in Penns Grove, NJ. She graduated from Penns Grove Re-Hi in 1957. She had many friends and loved growing up in Penns Grove. She and her family would visit Ocean City, NJ in the summers and this started her love of the quaint beach town.

Phyllis attended Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, DE before marrying James “Jay” Oberly in 1958. They raised their three children in Penns Grove. Every summer, when the kids were younger, they would go to Ocean City for the month of July. Those summers were wonderful memories for the whole family!

In the early 80’s, she started working at DuPont. In 1993, Phyllis’ dream of living by the beach came true when she found the perfect place in Marmora, NJ! Just minutes from the Ocean City beaches, it was well worth the daily 90-minute commute each way to Wilmington, DE. After retiring from DuPont, Phyllis couldn’t just stay home, so she worked front desk at Flanders hotel for a season or two. She eventually became an office assistant for Charlie Prose Productions, as well as an associate at Peebles Department store in Seaville, NJ from the day it opened until it closed September 30, 2021. She loved working at Peebles and getting to talk to so many people! Phyllis was definitely a fashionista!! She always made sure she was nicely dressed and with the perfect accessories!! But she also loved decorating, especially with her blue and white porcelain!!

Phyllis found another creative outlet and started making floral arrangements. After having many people asking her to make them a wreath or a table arrangement, she eventually, started selling nautical arrangements to Platt’s Beach House Furniture Store in Somers Point. Making floral arrangements was one of her favorite things to do! Phyllis loved being on her porch and making the arrangements out there, too.

Phyllis was also a member of the Second Cape May Baptist Church in Palermo. She loved the Lord and loved hearing the gospel and singing His praises!

Phyllis is predeceased by her parents, Francis Stout and Anna Stout Chapman, and her son, James “Jim” Oberly, III. She will be greatly missed by her sister Janet (Stout) Parriski; daughters, Lisa (Scott) Scholz and Janay (John) Ellsworth; grandsons Ryan Oberly, Michael Ellsworth, James Oberly IV, Joshua Oberly, and Christian Oberly; great-grandson Benjamin Flynn-Oberly; nieces Deborah Wood, Cathy Deramo-Burkstaller, and Susan Nickerson; as well as nephews Michael Deramo and Christopher Deramo. She will also be missed by many friends she made along the way – friends she greatly loved!

As per Phyllis’ wishes, there will be no formal service. The family will have a private service. There won’t be a head stone in a cemetery, as Phyllis chose to be cremated. She loved the ocean and whenever you visit the Jersey Shore, maybe say a little “Hello” to her! Just as the Bible says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28), Phyllis is now in Heaven rejoicing! Hallelujah!
